As funny as this could be, it would contain the truth!
I think that is Steve’s
motto or one of his mottos !!
Playing a funny guy is not
his end goal, nor is it his way to do it!
The most funny moments you
get is; when you are dead serious and don’t know that you are funny to begin
with
Steve Carell is not just a funny guy in movies!
So who he really is?!, as much as he tells us that he is too
boring in real life and couldn’t be more unfunny, yet we refuse to believe him!
Hollywood has drawn this awful picture of fame; to be
interesting to others you must have a notorious self and deep demons to fight
that are either border with mental illness or a terrible personality problem!!
Any body who looks normal is an anomaly in this dark holes studded sky!
And Steve problem is that he is normal in that way, but
don’t get me wrong, ONLY in this way, in every other aspect he is a true
fascinating person. So what if he doesn’t have a big personality or mental
issue, we still love him any way!!
Although appearing normal from the outside, this person is
genius!! He hides it in humility and self-deprecating jokes that sometimes nobody
gets it and think it is real!!!
He is a hard worker, which I know is a cliché for success,
and loves his wife and adores his children. His idea of investment is buying a
general store in his hometown to avoid demolishing this landmark, and of course
having a company that helps him make more of what he loves; movies!
He has this magic where he goes in his characters so deep
that you can only truly see their inner self subtly, not in a gregarious obvious
way, but it is like you have to know and understand them first to know what is really
behind their outer shell.
In other words; he is the first method-comedian-actor !!
In other words; he is the first method-comedian-actor !!
Michael Scott is a great example of that, he is an annoying
manger that can’t manage even himself, yet by the end you know he is so truly
loyal, desperately romantic and so scared from being alone! You just can’t help
but love his humanity and faulty self, your annoyance radar starts to tone down,
you are crying for his departure heavily by the end of season seven!
Another obvious example is Du pont in Foxcatcher; you see a
person who is doing everything right, even making dreams come true, but you
sense that there is something off, you feel this is fake, you hate the character
even you don’t know why, then you start to see glimpses of manipulation,
unrespect and jealousy covered by heavily disguised sweet words! Here you know
that something is going to happen, you are sure and then out of nowhere it
happens!
As a person Steve likes to hide his magic-processing tools behind the curtains, when he was a kid he used to have a magic kit and he always revealed how
his tricks where done after showing them to his friends, which made his spark
as a kid magician go away! So he learned his lesson as a grownup, he never talks about the process, he hates talking about it and usually evades the questions
asked to him by humor or self-deprecating or self-grandiosing jokes!
Ricky Gervais once said about him, he is handsome but not too handsome which makes him believable in every role he takes!
Ricky Gervais once said about him, he is handsome but not too handsome which makes him believable in every role he takes!
Meryl Streep said; he gives you this illusion that you don’t
see the whole picture about him!
And Bennet Miller Said; that every comedian has a dark side and
Steve has one too, just not showing it to the people!
While Jon Stewart Said; his agony is that he had no agony in
life!
Well those quotes may not be the "Actual" quotes but a sense of what they
are!
I think the best portrayal of Steve is this sketch he did in
Second City where he started; about this kind loveable serial killer who has a
nice chat with a woman in the laundry room, and while the woman is not sure whether she is going to be killed later on or not, she likes maintaining her talk with him. So in
one word “he could kill you with his kindness”!!!!!
On Conan he said; may be I am a sociopath that knows that
niceness sells well!
I am kidding! He knows that he is kind and that that shows
in every aspect of his life, just look at his laugh and how contagious it is,
it just makes you think he is a child with no worries, but he knows that some
may see it as a weakness, so he scares them! He makes them believe he is too
complicated for their minds so they are afraid of him! And it works. In one
interview he said that Tommy Lee Jones is a charismatic character that portray a
no-fool tolerance policy, so the press were afraid of him while not from me!
In other words he protects this kindness, niceness and
shyness by humor, scariness and wit!
Moral obligation is his code, even in the daily news when he
had to make fun of the people he interviewed, he always made fun of himself
mostly so he would over-shadow embarrassing them, thus they get a clean slate and won't
be laughed at in a loathing way !!
Describing his life as an actor as; just a job; is a huge underestimation! But that is the way he insists he sees it, I think that what makes it so joyful and fresh for him every time an award or a nomination come his way. He doesn’t campaign for his awards, so when he gets them, you know something is right with this world!!!
Every movie he makes you just can't believe how different it
is from the other; when you see a romantic in Seeking a friend or Dan in Real life,
you can't believe the fool in Anchorman or Dinner for Shmucks, you won't expect
the depeth of characterization in Foxcatcher or The Café or Battle for sexes,
you won't believe the cluelessness and desperation for love in Michael Scott and
Burt!, all this and we haven't talked yet about The 40 years old virgin or Get Smart!
So every time it is something new!!
